Now you are in Virginia and schools can close with just about any reason. If you are looking for school closing of course your local news stations will be available either online or on live broadcast. Another way is to go to your local website.
Code Zero (0) - All Day Closing (All Schools and Office Facilities Closed)
Decision Time – By 5:30 A.M.
Media Release – “All Stafford County Schools will be closed today.” Employees will be on Code zero”
- All school activities, day and evening, are canceled. No buses will operate.
- Schools, school division offices, and all support offices are closed. No employees shall report to work.
- All nonschool activities, day and evening, are canceled including adult education, college classes, and recreational programs scheduled in school buildings and school grounds.
Code I (1) – All Day Closing (All Schools and Offices Closed)
Decision Time – By 5:30 A.M.
Media Release – “All Stafford County Public Schools will be closed today.” Employees will be on Code I (1).

- All school activities, day and evening, are canceled. No buses will operate. Students will not attend.
- Schools and school division offices are closed.
- Certain administrators and emergency personnel, as designated by the Director of Operations and Maintenance and the Director of Fleet Services in Exhibit C, will report at specified times to perform emergency services. These emergency personnel and report times will have been identified beforehand and will be selected from the maintenance and custodial staff.
- All non-school activities, day and evening, are canceled including adult education, college classes, and recreational programs scheduled in school buildings and on school grounds.
Code II (2) - All Day Closing (All Schools Closed)
Decision Time – By 5:30 A.M.
Media Release – “All Stafford County Public Schools will be closed today.” Employees will be on Code II (2). Liberal leave is in effect. Administrative offices will open at 10:00 A.M.

- All school activities, day and evening, are canceled. No buses will operate. Students will not attend.
- Teachers, nurses, paraprofessionals, bus drivers, school nutrition and other school level staff who work less than 220 days shall not report on those days which will be made up by students. However, on those days, which are not to be made up by students, these employees shall follow the guidelines established by their principal or supervisor to make up the time required to fulfill their contract.
- Eleven-month service personnel who do not report to work will arrange with their supervisor to make up their time to complete their 220-day contract.
- Support services central staff to include: Fleet Services and Maintenance and Operations are to make reasonable effort to arrive on time.
- All administrative staff and all other service personnel, regardless of contract length, will report to work two hours late. Annual leave or personal leave may be requested after the fact (liberal leave) by those unable to report.
- School/central office custodial and maintenance staff shall arrive early to prepare for opening of administrative offices on a two-hour delay.
- All non-school activities, day and evening, are canceled including adult education, college classes and recreational activities scheduled in school division buildings and on school grounds.
Two-Hour Late Opening
Decision Time – By 5:30 A.M.
Media Release – “All Stafford County Public Schools will open two hours late. There will be no A.M. preschool classes. P.M. preschool will be delayed 1/2 hour. Inclement weather conditions will be reassessed at 7:15 A.M.”

- Students, teachers, nurses, paraprofessionals, and service personnel who work less than 220 days shall report two hours late.
- On delayed opening days, all administrative staff and all service personnel, with the exception of support services central staff to include: Fleet Services, Pupil Transportation and Maintenance and Operations are to make every reasonable effort to arrive at work one hour late. School/central office custodial and maintenance staff shall arrive prior to the arrival of other administrative and service staff.
- There will be no a.m. preschool classes and p.m. preschool classes will be delayed 1/2 hour.
- Breakfast programs cancelled.
- Lunch will be served.
- Regular field trips during the day are canceled. An exception may be made for trips and contests scheduled for after school hours. Such exceptions MUST have the approval of the Assistant Superintendent for Support Services.
- Dismissal will be at regular times.
Closing Procedures
How Decisions Are Made:
- Decisions are made based on conditions across the county and beyond to create a margin of safety for all travelers from all areas of the county. Conditions that can appear safe in one area may well be very different in another. Decisions take all areas into consideration to protect the safety of all our students and staff. Extensive decision making incorporates field surveys, review of weather forecasts, and coordination with other agencies.

- School closings, delayed openings, or early closing information will be announced on the PWCS home page as soon as decisions are made (Go to www.pwcs.edu, see the top of the “Announcements” section).
- When viewing the PWCS Web Site be sure to “Refresh” your web browser or in some cases you may need to CLOSE AND REOPEN YOUR BROWSER window if the refresh does not show the closing announcement.

- Note that sometimes a 2 hour delay is later changed to a full day school closing; so check for announcements frequently when there is a delayed opening.

- After School Activities
If schools close early or if schools Divisionwide are closed all day due to inclement weather, the after-school student activities, athletic activities, and GED/Adult Ed classes will be canceled.
However exceptions can be made in some cases and the school activity may be held as planned.
- Usually, no announcements will be made when schools are operating on a normal schedule.
- Code Red: Schools are closed and employees shall not report for work.Certain administrators and classified employees as specifically designated by their supervisor will report at times specified to perform essential duties such as snow removal.
- Code Green: Schools are closed and all 12-month employees and all administrators shall report for work. Annual leave may be requested by those employees unable to report for work (liberal leave).Students, teachers on less than 12-month contracts, teacher aides, bus drivers, bus driver attendants, cafeteria workers and other less than 12-month classified employees shall not report for work.
Two Hour Delayed Opening
- All students, teachers, teacher’s aides, bus drivers and bus driver attendants shall report on a two-hour delay.
- All classified employees, teachers on 12-month contracts, all administrators and all cafeteria workers report at normal times.
- Note that sometimes a 2 hour delay is later changed to a full day school closing; so check for announcements frequently when there is a delayed opening.
Early Closing (Both One-Hour And Two-Hour Early Dismissal)
- Teachers and teacher’s aides may be excused early by the principal after students have safely departed the building and grounds.
- Administrative staff and classified employees, except teacher’s aides, will remain on the normal work schedule unless specifically excused by an announcement from the Superintendent.
Staff Development Activities:
Staff development activities: If Prince William County Public Schools are closed for the entire day all staff development activities are canceled. If schools close early, staff development activities are canceled and will be rescheduled. If schools open late, activities may be cancelled; contact the department or school sponsoring the activity. Information on cancellation of Saturday staff development activities may be obtained by calling the department or school sponsoring the activity.
