It occured to me yesterday, when I saw a dead deer strapped across the top of a Range Rover screaming down I-95, that hunting season has kicked off in Virgnia… or, boy! the recession has really gone from bad to worse. When a Range Rover owner has to go to the local taxidermy place to have his Saturday night steak butchered and skinned, perhaps it is time to check your 401K and make sure that Maddof hasn’t found a way to tap into it. But despite warning shots from the market last week that there is still a long way to go in recovery, the dead deer was just a result of the first week in hunting season. This fact was confirmed just a few hours later, when on Route 1 North of Quantico, I spotted a beautiful new Black F-350 whose owner had proudly attached a contraption to the shiny front grill that allowed him to display, not one, but three sets of antlers. whoa… ’tis the season.
An outdoorsy friend of mine could take you on a tour of his last ten military assignments by the camoflauge hunting garb he had bought for each new hunting environment. He proudly displayed his Predator Brown Camo from his Alaska tour to his Shadowgrass full gear from Florida duck hunting. This friend also taught me that the rules to licensing and bagging in each state can be very complicated. Just in Shenandoah County there is one complicated rule that states…. If a hunter kills two antlered bucks in Shenandoah County, at least one of the bucks must have at least 4 antler points, 1 inch or longer, on one side. Perhaps you need a copy of Robert’s Rules of Order in your gear before you bag anything.
