Welcome Discovery Celebration at The Udvar-Hazy Center

by Laura on April 18, 2012

Did you watch the Discovery’s Landing on April 17th? What an amazing site to see the shuttle flying over the Nation’s Capital!

If you would like to see more of the Discovery then check out the Welcome Discovery Celebration at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA. The Celebration takes place on April 19th between 8:00am and 6:30pm.

The Celebration begins at 8:00am, and McDonalds will be there offering food service both inside and outside the Center.  At 9:30am  the ceremony area will open and at 11:00am the Discovery arrives at the Udvar-Hazy Center. Once the Discovery arrives their will be a ceremony celebrating the transfer of the shuttle to it’s new home at the Smithsonian Museum.

Some of the great entertainment that will be on hand includes the U.S. Marine Drum and Bugle Corps, Denyce Graves singing the National Anthem and some of the Discovery crew members. Also, former Astronaut Senator John Glenn will be a guest speaker. The Celebration will also include a nose-to-nose meeting of the Space Shuttles Discovery and Enterprise. You will also get to see  the signing of the document transferring the Discovery from NASA to the Smithsonian Institute. The Celebration includes many activities including a chance to sign a space shuttle tire!

If you can not make it out to the celebration you can watch a live webcast !
The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is located at 14390 Air and Space Museum Parkway, Chantilly, VA 20151.

The Celebration is FREE, parking is $15.00.

This sounds like a great way to spend the day and you get to see not one but two Space Shuttles!
