Crispy leaves and crunchy veggies

Farmers Market

The wonderful Virginia fall weather really extends the lives of both our personal gardens and those colorful farmers markets.  I’ve been watching my favorite neighbor, aka Farmer MacGregor, still harvesting from his fabulous tomato plants even this late in the season…  not to mention the fabulous fall squashes and winter veggies coming in by the basketful.

If you have black thumbs, like myself, and don’t have a generous neighbor to pick from, I would highly suggest you hit one of the local farmer’s markets that are winding down their season as October grows to a close.

There is a great search engine page that helps you get information about 46 different farmers markets… just in Northern Virginia! I don’t think my Farmer MacGregor is on there yet… trying to keep those crunchy veggies just for me!  Try searching for a market near you here.. Virginia Farmer’s Markets

Secret Code to Northern Virginia Living

September 30, 2009 By: mbomichele Category: commuting, Food Specialties 6 Comments →

It’s like a new set of military acronyms to learn…. HOV, slug, WTOP, 95 corridor, Nats, Caps, Skins, Old Town, the Hill, the Mall, the Spur, Beltway Bandits, hacks, and gaggles. Listening to traffic reports and watching the news for NOVA newbies can sometimes create even more disorientation.

Yes! there should be a handbook for living, working, commuting and having a great time in DC.  All of us transplants and those hard to find natives have bushels (crab bushels that is)  of opinions about the right way to commute, the best places to live, the easiest way to get to Baltimore, the best coffee and the only way to get in and out of DC on the Fourth of July.  BTW, the only way to really steam a crab is Maryland style… in beer with a ton of Old Bay and spices, served hot on top of yesterday’s newspaper.  Beer, paper towels, and a mallet are all that is required.  The season is still going .. Maryland Steamed Crabs Recipe (forget the cider, a can of cheap beer instead).

There is so much to know and learn about the DC area! Chime in!

“Spring has come to the English town of Stafford and it has come time for the election of a new mayor. The stately Sir John Woodward and the opportunistic Sir Walter Aston have both been nominated to serve the people of Stafford as Mayor. Shortly after Sir Walter casts the first ballot, though, the ballot box is stolen on the orders of Sir Walter’s social climbing wife. Will the ballot box be recovered before the votes must be tallied or will Sir Walter’s vote be the only one that decides the fate of Stafford?

Last Season’s Story
Stafford.     For centuries, this quiet crossroad town has been a haven for farmers and merchants trying to make an honest living. Now, all of that is going to change. A growing storm is on the horizon, a storm threatening to steal the lands from the good folk of Stafford and turn them over to the big business of wool. Sir Walter Aston has come to the town of Stafford in order to complete his takeover of the land he needs to make him rich. His plan is simple: buy the land, throw off the peasants, raise sheep and sell the wool overseas.

He faces only one obstacle: the good people of Stafford. Will the town be able to stave off this threat to their way of life? Will a champion arise to fight for them? Or will rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and all but the most wealthy lose everything they have? Can the good people of Stafford band together to stop the evil plans of Sir Wally Aston?”
The Virginia Renaissance Faire is back and bigger than ever.  It will be from May 17 - June 22, 2008 at the Lake Anna Winery.  It features a unique brand of educational interactive family entertainment.  Come on in and join the revelry as the little 16th century town of Staffordshire celebrates the arrival of Elizabeth, Queen of England and her glittering court.

The production of Grease will be appearing through July 27, 2008.  This 1959 musical celebration of rock, doo wop amd rhythimic drum beats is reliving your favorite musical tunes that are still “hopelessly cool” even in 2008.  The students of Rydell High face a new school year filled with rebellion and romance.  The “T” birds, led by teenage heartthrob Danny uko, focus on hot cars whil the Pink Ladies experiment with cigarettes and peirced ears.  Sandy “the new girl in town” is fresh from a brief summer romance with Danny, and is stunned when he ignores her because of her squeaky clean image.  This is a story of teenage hang-ups, peer pressures and social issues are all brought into the limelight with a Grease musical flare.  Enjoy the notable songs from both the stage and movie versins including Summer Nights, Freddy My Love, Greased  Lightning, and Look and Me - I’m Sandra Dee.  Come and get groovy with this great classic on stage at the Riverside Dinner Theater.

Cupids Fun things to do with Your Sweetheart on Valentines Day

February 14, 2008 By: hockeyandhorsey Category: holiday events, Food Specialties, Children, Family Friendly No Comments →

Cupids Fun things to do with Your Sweetheart on Valentines DayFebruary 14 is Valentines Day.  Legend has it that a certain third-century priest named St.Valentine was performing marriage ceremonies despite a ban by the Roman Emperor Claudius II.  Claudius II thought single men made better soldiers for his army.  Eventually Valentine was thrown in jail.  There he fell in love with his jailor’s daughter and he signed his last message to her “From your Valentine”.  St. Valentine was executed on February 14.  There were two Saints associated with this holiday.  The other was  another Roman who was a christian and was killed on the same day because he was a christian.

Today, it is a day to tell people you love them and exchange Valentine’s cards.  Of course it has turned into more than cards.  There are so many things to do with your loved one on Valentine day.  Here are just a few in our local area:

Come to sip wine with your sweetheart at Potomac Point Winery.   Come for a day for sparkling wine paired with decadent chocolate covered strawberries.  Admission is $14.99/Person.

Join us for the Tot Valentine Party at the Stafford Gym and Rec center for songs, crafts and games.  Ages 2-5 at 10 am.  $8

The Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse is screening “The Princess Bride”.  The doors open at 6:30 pm for live music bye Everyone but Pete and an optional wine tasting with the  Washington Wine Academy.  Stand up comedian Jon Mumma takes the state at 7:45 and  Tickets are $8 and include everything except the wine tasting which is a $1 for each ounce you tast.

Or skip the dinner and stay in.  Cook for your sweetheart, play a game with the family but whatever you do just do it together.

Happy Valentines day from Quantico Live and Military By owner.

No matter what you decied to do together on Valentines day
