ROCK THE RED!

washington Capitals

CAPS fans and soon to be CAPS fans! Rock your Red tonight as the Washington Capitals host Montreal for their first game of the NHL playoffs.  The Caps are looking good as the Eastern Conference Regular Season Champions and heavy favorites going into the playoffs!  The puck drops at 7:00 tonight at the Verizon Center .

This season, the Capitals didn’t just rise to the top of the NHL pack, they made a mockery of the standings, besting their nearest competitor in the Southeast Division (Atlanta) by 38 points, finishing 18 points ahead of their nearest competitor in the Eastern Conference (New Jersey) and besting the San Jose Sharks by eight points to secure their first Presidents’ Trophy.  Alex Ovechkin, who was named team captain midway through the season, is in line for his third straight Hart Trophy as league MVP, even though he and his 109 points finished out of the running for the Art Ross and Rocket Richard Trophies on the final weekend of the regular season. Nicklas Backstrom has emerged as a top-five player in the NHL, finishing fourth in the league with 101 points.

The Return of Tiger Woods

April 13, 2010 By: mbomichele Category: sports No Comments →

golf in virginia

So,  how is it that Tiger Woods could reenter the world of high intensity, high stress, mentally and physically challenging major golf tourneys and barely flinch until the last 15 holes?  Is he heartless, spineless.. or just an addict of another type? Perhaps, EgoCentric Addict? Do you think Buddhism or his therapist have factored that into his treatment plan?  Either way, watching him stride around the beautiful fairways of Augusta put me in the mood to pull out the sticks and hit the links.  Ther eare lot so great courses in the loca area.  Some offer great spring specials…. Check them out:

For those that don’t know, CrossFit is a functional fitness program that trains the entire body.  Workouts help people of all ages get back in shape, or get in much better shape and condition. John, the managing partner, started CrossFit a little over a year ago and realized that he didn’t have to bench press 315 lbs anymore.

“At 48, I was looking for something that would cut my weight and make me feel younger and more energized.  I stumbled on CrossFit and have been hooked ever since. Â I have dropped 20 lbs and feel much more energized then I can remember.”

CrossFit Stafford isn’t like the big block gyms. “For us to be successful, you must be successful. There are Level I and Level II CrossFit Certified Coaches on the staff as well as an elite trainer to provide health screening, diet, nutrition and other fitness advice. They are an average group of people with a life-long love of fitness, helping people and commitment to excellence.  All found CrossFit and became instant believers because they got great results. T

he results came with more effort, but in much less time than expected.  They had fun doing it with a group and found got better results because of the encouragement and support everyone provided.  CrossFit Stafford believes working out shouldn’t be monotonous, long or take years to get results.

They believe in fitness and in CrossFit as a life style. Your workout routine should: (1) get results and (2) you should have fun doing it. If it isn’t you are doing something wrong.Their goal is to introduce, promote and facilitate elite fitness through CrossFit for everyday people of all ages in a community environment with personal involvement and encouragement from everyone involved (Coaches, Owners and Participants). If you don’t show up, you can expect an email or phone call.

They want participants, of all ages, who are in the very best condition of their lives. They push each other and they encourage and challenge everyone to do their best. When you think you’ve done your best, we’ll challenge you again. Then we’ll challenge you to come back for more the next day. They all help you stay committed and change your life through CrossFit.  They promise that your workouts won’t be boring and that you’ll feel it when you’re done working out.

Zorn out…Shanahan in. State of the Sports in DC

January 06, 2010 By: mbomichele Category: sports No Comments →

In a not so surprising move, the Redskins owner Dan Snyder, fired Jim Zorn and quickly hired ex-Broncos guru Mike Shanahan.  Snyder released a statement noting that he realizes he was part of the problem…. ” I certainly accept responsibility for mistakes that I have made.” Nowhere in the statement did Big Redskin Dan outline how he would refrain from making those same micromanaging mistakes again.

In this era of high profile falls from grace, the “apology” and “reponsibility” statement are almost as boilerplate as the warning on the top of your Hot Coffee from McDonalds.  Tiger Woods, Letterman, SC Gov Sanford…. taking many of their cues from perhaps the originial apologizer… former President Bill Clinton.

Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that in this politically savy town that even our sports press releases read like a “mea culpa” on the latest indiscretion of our electorate.  So, while the Redskins move into the Shanahan era, lets enjoy the CAPS and WIZARDS for awhile.

The Washington Capitals are having an outstanding season.  Although they were picked to advance far into the Stanley Cup Playoffs, they have only suffered a few uncharacteristic losses and look ripe to meet those expectations.

Although the Wizards have the 9th highest payroll in the NBA, they are currently playing well below expectations.   The question is whether ownership will weather this storm and see if the team gels in the next few weeks or have a fire sale to unload some of its high priced talent.

Enjoy our winter athletics…soon enough we will HAVE to talk about the Nationals…

The Yankees. (you don’t have to love baseball to be a sportsfan in DC)

November 05, 2009 By: mbomichele Category: sports No Comments →

The first and last World Series of this decade are owned by those boys in pinstripes, the New York Yankees.   A decade ago, we had Y2K….. now, H1N1.  A decade ago the stock market was dancing around the $11,000 mark … today a stiff and awkward dance with 10,000.   One of the few numbers that went up during that decade was A-Rods salary that he somehow managed to renegotiate for 275 million over the next ten years and then finally won the Wrold Series.  Do you think Georgie is wondering where the last 24 million a year went when each October ARod seemed to choke on his checkbook?

Yankee fans, I’m not happy that ARod decided to wake from his October nap time this year.  It’s easy to hate them again.

Northern Viriginians, would the addition of a big slugger invigorate the Senators (masquerading at the Nationals) or the Orioles?  Highly unlikely, as both teams finished last in their division  at 34 and 39 games out of first respectively. But have hope Sportsfans of the DC metro area.  You can adopt your northern brethren and ride the Raven wave into the playoffs??  The Washington Capitols are looking great this year and riding the top of their division.  Most importantly, some great college basketball goes on within the metro area.   Check out Georgetown, the new darling of the NCAA George Mason and of course rightside of the Beltway Brut… the Maryland Terps.  All well worth your devoted fan craziness.  Midnight Madness kicked off just a few short weeks ago and it won’t be long until those polished boards are pounding with some of the most talented athletes in the country (despite ARod).  And… they play for free… (sort of)

Camo up… it’s hunting season in Virginia.

October 13, 2009 By: mbomichele Category: sports, weekend activities No Comments →

It occured to me yesterday, when I saw a dead deer strapped across the top of a Range Rover screaming down I-95, that hunting season has kicked off in Virgnia… or, boy!  the recession has really gone from bad to worse.  When a Range Rover owner has to go to the local taxidermy place to have his Saturday night steak butchered and skinned, perhaps it is time to check your 401K and make sure that Maddof hasn’t found a way to tap into it.  But despite warning shots from the market last week that there is still a long way to go in recovery, the dead deer was just a result of the first week in hunting season.  This fact was confirmed just a few hours later, when on Route 1 North of Quantico, I spotted a beautiful new Black F-350 whose owner had proudly attached a contraption to the shiny front grill that allowed him to display, not one, but three sets of antlers. whoa… ’tis the season.

An outdoorsy friend of mine could take you on a tour of his last ten military assignments by the camoflauge hunting garb he had bought for each new hunting environment.  He proudly displayed his Predator Brown Camo from his Alaska tour to his Shadowgrass full gear from Florida duck hunting.  This friend also taught me that the rules to licensing and bagging in each state can be very complicated.  Just in Shenandoah County there is one complicated rule that states…. If a hunter kills two antlered bucks in Shenandoah County, at least one of the bucks must have at least 4 antler points, 1 inch or longer, on one side. Perhaps you need a copy of Robert’s Rules of Order in your gear before you bag anything.

But for more practical applications… check out these important sites for information:

Game and Fishing Information in Virginia

Virginia Hunting and Trapping Regulations

Virginia Hunting Seasons and Bag Limits

 Virginia Game and Fish Magazine

A great hunt really results from good local flavor and information…      any good sites out there to share about hunting in Virginia?   Deerhuntingchat.com is a good place to start… you got one?
