Shopping…. there is no Substitute

December 08, 2009 By: mbomichele Category: Uncategorized No Comments →

The holiday season means parties, food, decorations, cards, and of course shopping!! Black Friday has passed peacefully without trampling incidents, and now it is time to really find those treasures.  If you aren’t looking for the discount on the 42″ plasma or a bargain on three for one on video games, where would you go to really find those special gifts?  Northern Virginia and the greater DC area host some very special and unique shopping.  Many of these neighborhood shoppping districts boast local owners with an interest in the community.  So, if you don’t want to give your credit card to someone with a smock on…. try some of these areas….

Downtown Fredericksburg  - Shopping in historic Fredericksburg spans three centuries. Literally unique among shopping districts, every shop in downtown Fredericksburg, Virginia is a small, one-of-a-kind, owner-operated boutique. Fredericksburg’s specialty antique shops draw keepsakes from rural and urban estates throughout the Southeast

Historic Occoquan  This peaceful, riverfront community is the perfect tonic for a busy, metro-area lifestyle. Come and experience Occoquan’s rich history and beauty. Shop and dine in over 100 businesses and restaurant.

Old Town AlexandriaNationally recognized for its early-American architecture, variety of hotels, unique boutiques, award-winning  and inexpensive historic attractions, as well as quick and easy access to the many free Washington D.C. sites, Alexandria is the perfect getaway to shop, dine and celebrate.

Leesburg -Stroll through Leesburg’s historic district and you’ll discover quaint shops situated in stately buildings. Home furnishings and fashion clothing stores, art and antique galleries, gourmet food and wine boutiques, and more are waiting to be explored.

PieTown!

November 23, 2009 By: mbomichele Category: Uncategorized No Comments →

Thanksgiving is fast approaching! Although Giant, Sam’s Club, Costco and Wegman’s all carry some variety of a holiday pie, you can be certain that it was pressed into that pan by some humongous machine out of 1984 and then a glob of some gooey preservative ridden goop was splashed into it by a siphon the size of a small Pacer.  mmmmm! Yummy? Seriously folks, you get what you pay for and your $8.99 pumpkin or apple pie you buy at Safeway will barely test better than actually eating eight one dollar bills with a little brown sugar and cool whip on top.  So… what to do if you don’t have time to bake yourself or you weren’t blessed with the Julia Child gene?  All over Northern Virginia there are small local bakeries that may want a few more of your George Washingtons, but will really deliver that homemade taste.  Washington DC and its surrounding suburbs is one of the few areas still rich in local bakeries.  Check out some of the ones listed and below…. and PLEASE contribute your local favorite.  Support these local bakers to keep our tastebuds fully functional.

Mom’s Apple Pie Company is one of the best and most famous, it has been featured on the Food Network with locations in both Occoquan and Leesburg.

Little Apple Pastry Shop is a little bit further out of your way in Aldie…. but fabulous!!

The Red Truck Rural Bakery in Warrenton specializing in baked goods from local produce and their own fruit trees.

Baked and Wired In Georgetown is one of the most highly rated and reviewed bakeries in the city.

The Pie Gourmet in Vienna, Virginia called “a gem among local bakeries” by the Washington Post.

Enjoy the holiday eating and post your favorite place to have pie!
